The idea and seed money for the Creative Industries Conference was born when Candace Jones received a Chair in Global Creative Enterprise from the University of Edinburgh Business School, which agreed to provide seed money and support for conferences in 2016 and 2018.
At a 2015 Wharton workshop on creative industries organized by Frédéric Godart, she pitched Frédéric Godart (INSEAD), Damon Phillips (Columbia), Gino Cattani (NYU), and Amandine Ody-Brazier (Yale), the idea of rotating a Creative Industries Conference among the schools, which was enthusiastically agreed upon.
The first conference was held in Edinburgh in 2016, co-hosted by the University of Edinburgh Business School, Cass Business School, and Imperial College Business School. In 2017, the conference was held in New York and hosted by Columbia and NYU. In 2019, the conference was held in Paris and co-hosted by INSEAD, HEC and IESEG.
Starting in 2020, the University of Edinburgh Business School, Edinburgh Futures Institute, INSEAD, and Yale School of Management agreed to co-fund with local organizers to keep the conference momentum going, along with Columbia’s involvement. As other enthusiasts joined the party, the conference included other university hosts and places, such as Amsterdam.
Today, the conference brings together scholars from various institutions and different disciplines to share their research and knowledge on the field of creative industries.
The Creative Industries Executive Committee is composed of scholars from University of Edinburgh Business School, INSEAD, Columbia and Yale School of Management. The other universities coordinate as needed when they act as local organizers and co-hosts for a year.
